Ca' Gigia
Ca' Gigia is located in the neighborhood of San Polo, well-known for its restaurants and the fact that it's super central but not too touristy. It's located about 100-150 meters from the Basilica dei Frari, one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in Venice, and the Rialto Bridge is within walking distance. The most important (and well, only 'real') fish and vegetable market, Rialto Mercato, nearby makes it convenient to save a little money by cooking meals in the apartment during your stay. There are also two supermarkets close by, and the vaporettos depart in all directions from a nearby canal stop.

Ca' Gigia is a quiet apartment accessed from a nice inner courtyard. You enter into the living room with kitchenette and bathroom, and there's one other room, the bedroom with a queen-sized bed and a queen-sized sofabed in the same room but the two sleeping areas are separated by a large closet. (It is, however, one smallish room so there's not a lot of privacy-- I'd say it's good for a family with kids or a group of very close friends or close family).
It's located on the first floor (no elevator) of a picturesque typical Venetian building. The apartment is equipped with air-conditioning, TV, dishwasher, hair dryer, washer, radio, phone (with free calls in Italy to landline phones), and WiFi at an additional cost of 2 euros per hour.

Great location, so close to the station and Frari, supermarkets and restaurants. The bed was very comfortable. We would stay there again as it's a good bolt hole.
We love cooking and would love a steamer for vegetables and a sharp knife! The plastic knife, which was the sharpest, did not cut it.
Very easy and convenient. We would use them again.

More towels. Also the description of how to get to this apartment are severely lacking. The owner's emails were confusing. People in Venice understand that the street name and building number do not always correspond to the actual street name. Finding the place was quite difficult because the street name is very different from the one we were told. There was no mention of the nearest piazza. I think we stopped by 4 different shops to ask directions as we worked our way into the real location. We see from the reviews that others had a similar problem.
Very professional. Quick response. And good selection of apartments from which to choose.
Admin on 10. Oct 2016:
We're sorry you had a hard time reaching Ca' Gigia. The owner informed me that you refused to have someone meet you at the station (a service the owner provides at her own expense) because you insisted that you'd enjoy arriving by yourselves. Regarding the towels, they provide towels for your stay and they aren't changed daily like in a hotel. If you request more, they will be happy to provide them.
Phillip on May 2016:

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay! The apartment is charming, spacious, and well-located. It has a kitchen with fridge and microwave, and a decent-sized bathroom (for what we saw in Europe) with an endless water heater that worked great for us (just follow the instructions and leave the sink faucet running lightly while you shower; no troubles at all). There's even a washer for doing laundry, and a sturdy clothesline right outside the window for drying. There's a sitting room with a comfortable couch and an A/C unit for hot days. The wifi worked flawlessly. And as for location, there are a few pretty views and good restaurants nearby, and you can get just about anywhere you'd want to go in Venice within about 20-30 minutes of walking... all of it beautiful! We really loved the city, the people, and the food, and this apartment made it feel like home.
There are only three things that come to mind as issues: - The directions to the apartment weren't totally clear. We eventually figured out where to go, and reached the point where they said to open a gate... which was locked. You can't get through it without the keys. Now, we were later than we expected; perhaps the person meeting us there was supposed to meet us at the gate? Side-note: you can't trust Google Maps 100% of the time for addresses in Venice. I updated the location for the address of the apartment, so hopefully that will help people in the future. - Locking the front door from the outside is almost a two-person job: one person pulling on the door as hard as they can, and the other turning the key. We had one instance where we unlocked the door, and I think the bolt got stuck and didn't fully disengage. We were about to call, but we tried locking and unlocking it again, and that worked. - The bed is *extremely* firm. My wife and I often sleep on our sides; after the second night, our hips felt bruised. The pillows are also all very flat and firm. We actually went and bought pillows (from TSL bedding store), and used the flat pillows to further pad the mattress. I left my pillow there, so... you're welcome. :P The bed was the only thing that was really a turn off for us. The other two issues were fairly minor.
Cross-Pollinate is excellent! We used them to book our stays here and in Paris. We'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a place to stay!
Stewart on Apr 2016:

A quiet, very clean and quite comfy space, great for two. Good bed, good shower, nice building and a pleasant, off-the-beaten-track neighbourhood. Two lovely campos very close: San Giacomo dall'Orio and San Polo - loved them both! Also a great restaurant right across the street, Due Colonne - our best meal in Venice! Easy to get to the sights (about a 10-minute walk to the Rialto), the train station and also a good grocery store nearby with late hours.
As we wanted to cook meals fairly frequently, we found the pots, pans and utensils could have been quite a bit better. Some new pans (the non-stick coating was badly damaged on all of them) and at least one or two good sharp knifes and a cutting board, to start. Also, the storage in the bedroom was taken up with way more sheets, towels etc. than we would need, and not enough room left for our clothes. These are both easy fixes.
We found Cross-Pollinate terrific in terms of communication, ease-of-use and integrity. Strongly recommend!
Kathy Bourque on Oct 2015:

Quiet, away from the hustle-bustle of Grand Canal areas. Near restaurants, bakeries, cafes. Walking distance from bus and train stations (even with our 25" suitcases). Washing machine (which we did not use). WiFi (which we used often).
The (three) keys to enter the apartment... one key opened the iron gate into the courtyard, the second key opened the door to our building, and the third key opened the door to the actual apartment. All the keys/locks, especially key one and two, took several twists and turns to open doors. We had to wait, one morning, for another resident to open the door to the courtyard. The owner, Daniela, was always available by phone and was very accommodating in that she sent her Venice management person to our rescue. Nevertheless, we spent time running to a nearby pasticceria to get a second set of keys and using my minimal Italian and the help of a customer to explain how Daniela had left a spare set of keys for her renters and could I please take them... . It was always on our mind, when the clock struck 9pm... 10... that we should head "home" in case we could not get into the courtyard or apartment building and needed to call Daniela at a late hour. Daniela said she would be having new keys made after our stay.
I appreciated the emails and clear communication from Cross-Pollinate.

Always helpful!
Paul & Elsie on Jul 2015:

spacious for my wife and I, good location. We originally thought our daughter would be with us which still would have worked had she have come as there was a pull out couch.
a few more pieces of cutlery
we stayed in July 2015: very much enjoyed our stay, would definitely come again. From the airport, we took the airport bus (brought return ticket) straight forward and direct to Piazzale Roma. We took the wrong bridge on arrival so got slightly lost. SO as a pointer to other guests, in the middle of the square where the bus drops you there is a rectangular covered canopy for some buses, it points to the bridge you want. Very easy walk from there, yes a couple of bridges but we did not have trouble with our luggage. So this location was good as was a good balance between carrying luggage too far vs being right in say around San Marco. Restaurant prices and food we found better away from Main Canal, some nice restaurants close to the apartment We quickly got to know our way around which at first seemed a tough task but quickly wasn't. You do lots of walking in Venice which was fine by us. We took small water bottles which we constantly filled up at various Square's water fountains which were safe to drink, saved carrying big water bottles. We had 30 deg C weather which was nice. We did take the water bus occasionally just to experience the canals and travel further a field. We also undertook a day trip to Murano and Burano which we enjoyed. We also took the train to Verona for the day which is quite doable, just over an hour by train, and an easy walk to train station. Initially I had trouble connecting to wifi but I had brought a cable (as back up) so hooked directly to modem but then was ok on wifi. Hosts Daniela & Joe were also reachable if there are any issues. We have no hesitations on recommending
Ron from USA on Jul 2015:

Central location to most everything. Quiet neighborhood. Very clean.
Directions to apartment need updating. The ones on the site are very hard to follow for people who have never been there. They should take you from bus or train station to Frari campo because most of the buildings in that area have arrows pointing you on how to get to the Frari Church. It is only a few blocks from there. We wonder around and an 8 minute walk from Piazzle Romma turned into 30 minutes and we went right by the Frari Church. The host was angry with us because we were late due to the directions. We also went to the bakery shop as instructed in the directions when we were late and the gate was not unlocked for us to enter, only to find the bakery is seasonal and not opened till August.
Very easy to use and will use again

Venice is a difficult city to navigate. The owner of Ca' Gigia had made arrangements to send someone to meet them on arrival and accompany them to the apartment, but they arrived early and didn't wait for her. When they arrived at the apartment, no one was there to meet them because the woman was looking for them at the meeting place they'd set up!
Kareen on Sep 2014:
Quiet. Nice space. Great kitchen for preparing your own meals.
Evelyn Smart on Jun 2014:

Fantastic location. We lived like locals. Loved the pizzeria 2 doors away. This was a very relaxing, very well appointed apartment. Venice is expensive and it was great to have our own wine and pizza and tea and coffee when we felt like it. The air con worked really well as it was very hot when we were there. We loved hanging our washing out like locals too!
We had problems with the shower which was either very hot or very cold. The bed was not the greatest.
Thank you for waiting for us way past our arrival time. We were rather late due to our plane delay and although the directions were great, Venice is complicated and we got quite lost.
Margaret & Jim Cadwaladr on May 2014:

The location was excellent; centrally located yet quiet and off the beaten track. Be sure to follow the directions provided by the owners on how to find the place. We were able to walk to this location from the train station, with our rolling luggage, in about 15 minutes. (the stair bridges are a slight challenge, the first being the most difficult; but if you know this is going to happen it is not so bad) We really liked the apartment. It felt like visiting friends as it is furnished and appropriated as if the owners stay there on occasion themselves. That was very nice indeed. There is a very good CO-OP food store close by. Ask the host where it is when you arrive. There are also, of course, very good street markets in the squares. We felt like we could comfortably stay for an extended period in this apartment.
The hot water is tricky when having a shower; so get advice on how to operate from the host when you arrive. I think this comment could apply to Europe in general. Being from Canada we were not use to this type of on-demand hot water system. Mosquito screening in the windows would be a very good improvement. Not surprisingly there are mosquitos Venice.
Very good, no problems at any of the three bookings made through C.P. All three met or exceeded our expectations.
Steve on Apr 2014:

Beautiful apartment. Comfy bed. Great relaxing living room and dining room area. We were thankful to have the easy to use washing machine and then hug our clothes on the line from a window like a Venetian! It was nice to do this since we are from a place where hanging out our clothes out is uncommon. It was also very close to the train station which was nice.
The owner was not there to greet us at the scheduled time so we had to go to the recommended point to get the keys but we could not get the keys to work so we had to go back to the meeting point so they could call the owner to send a friend to bring us in. Once inside, we were pleased.
Admin on 23. Apr 2014:
Glad you had a good stay! From what we understand, the delay was due to the fact that you arrived before the planned time, and that you'd reserved the day before - which took some last minute coordinating as the owner was not in Italy.
Edith Parsons on Mar 2014:

The apartment was comfortable, very clean, and gave the three of us more than enough space. The kitchen was particularly appreciated since one of my daughters has some complex diet restrictions. Although we never met our host, Daniela, she arranged to have someone waiting to let us into the apartment and to show us around at our agreed upon arrival time. She also phoned on two occasions and left us contact information in case we had any questions and/or had any concerns. In all, we felt that we were well looked after. Daniela's directions were clear and thorough--probably the only time we didn't feel lost in Venice!.
Cross-Pollinate staff were quick to respond to my initial request for accommodation. The information they provided was clear and specific. Thanks.
Cathy O\\\'Connor on Sep 2013:

Once we found it, the location was great for wandering around a real neighborhood. Less than 10min stroll to St Stae. Great gelato near there.
My only thing was that the bed was very firm. We have a softer mattress at home so it was more of a personal thing.
They were very accommodating when we had to reschedule due to a family emergency. Very easy to communicate with. We will definitely use them again when we return to Italy.
on Jul 2013:
Great place in all aspects. Great deal.
Frank Travers on Jun 2013:

Neat, clean, comfortable accomodation. In the heart of Venice which conveys how it is to live in this unique city more so than staying in a hotel which could be anywhere given that all hotels are basically the same.
Of the two sets of instructions provided to locate the place, the second which referred to accessing it via water, requires clarification. What's written doesn't appear to conform with what's there.
A positive experience. Accomodation we found both in Venice and Rome was more than adequate all things considered and Cross Pollinate's presentation of the characteristics of the properties was an accurate reflection of this.
Marianne on Jun 2013:

I liked having an apartment. We fixed our own simple meals and still stepped outside to amazing Venice. We could walk everywhere we wanted to. We had been traveling a week already so we used the washing machine.
It was very hot and the A/C did not work well. It seemed to have a limit programmed in. We followed the host's request and turned it off while we were out, but it was uncomfortable. The bedsheets were an old polyester blend that had that pebbly feel.
No comment, really, you were just a listing service. It did not feel like a great find. Would not use it again.
Admin on 26. Jun 2013:
I'm sorry you felt we were just a listing service. I'm confident that NO ONE goes to the length we do to make sure everything on our site is quality controlled, or offers the kind of quick support we do! As for the AC, for the record, I totally agree that when you are out during the day, it should not be left on. This is just wasteful. The owner reports that the guests changed the programming and she sent someone around to reprogram it and they seemed happy with it after that. However, when there's a heat wave in Italy, I'm afraid no amount of AC will give it that freezer feeling common in most of the US though. This is, in part, due to less wattage available, which is, in part, due to the difficulties in putting in modern infrastructure in an ancient city.
Marcia on May 2013:

The apartment, just the right size for the two of us, is in a terrific location. It's an easy walk from the train station and to all of the tourist sites, yet in a quieter neighborhood. Restaurants, gelaterias and shops abound in Venice, and we did not have to go far to find good ones. Two grocery stores are close by and the Rialto Market is an easy walk. The owner was out of town while we were there, but she made a point to call and speak to us personally upon arrival and before departure and was very nice. Her helper, who let us in the apartment, was very nice and welcoming as well. The apartment itself was really clean and well cared for. The bed was very comfortable. If we get back to Venice again, as we hope to, we will definitely book this place for another stay.
This was our first trip to Europe. We knew that we wanted to stay in an apartment rather than a hotel, but were a bit nervous about the booking process. It was helpful to know that the Cross-Pollinate staff had seen all of the rentals and talked with the owners before listing them on the site. That bit of quality control made the whole booking easier.
Tim on May 2013:
It's a clean and good location for us. We enjoyed having breakfast at the bakery at near by.

Delightful apartment. I loved the residential location with more locals than tourists, and the evening atmosphere at nearby CampoSant'Agostin was quite intoxicating - a neighbourhood passeggiata in Venice is hard to beat. Brilliant! Highly recommended.
