Cross Pollinate was just the best. I had tried a couple of places before coming upon them. As soon as I sent the first email I stopped looking for any more websites. I just wish they expanded to every city in Europe. Their knowledge, helpfulness, etc. was second to none. - Caroline Collis
Casa Valentina
Casa Valentina is very conveniently located in the elegant neighborhood of Dorsoduro, in a quiet street away from the crowds. The train station and piazzale Roma (where all the buses getting in and out of the city stop) are both only about 10 minutes by foot, and very easy to find. Most sights are also only about a 15-minute walk away, and one of Venice's more famous squares (in Venice called campo or campi, not piazza; San Marco is the only one allowed the word "piazza"!) Campo Santa Margherita, a great place for aperitif finger food and restaurants, is just around the corner, as is the Accademia delle Belle Arti (with its bridge, across the Grand Canal) and the Peggy Guggenheim museum. On Campo Santa Margherita you'll also find two of Venice's best gelaterie: GROM and Il Dodge. Please don't miss out on either! (Especially the first-- although a bit pricier than most others, all natural, and all traditional.)

The apartment itself is spacious, feels nice and has been renovated a few years ago. There's a good-sized kitchen with eating/sitting area, a double bedroom, a small single bedroom, and two bathrooms. There are trundle beds that can be made up to form two single beds in a 'living-room' part of the corridor.

The owners, a very sweet couple, live between Venice and Trieste, about an hour away by train (and worth a trip, too!).

Michael on Sep 2019:

The location is very good - away from the tourist crowd but only minutes from the Piazzale Roma transportation hub and only minutes the other way from Campo Santa Margherita (one of our favorite squares). The apartment itself is roomy and comfortable. Two bedrooms and two baths. Our luggage had its own bedroom. We each had our own bathroom. There is a washing machine, which we did not use. The kitchen worked well for light cooking and there were plenty of pans and utensils. We will try to stay here again when we return to Venice.
My only caveat is that the street outside is noisy in the evening - perhaps many university students passing by. It was quiet by bedtime.
Always positive. I feel Cross-Pollinate is more responsive than other listing sites.
Jack on Jun 2019:

The apartment was nice and it was an easy walk to the train station. We enjoyed our stay there.
The Wi-Fi was terrible. The person who was supposed to meet us at the train didn’t show up. We waited for about 30 minutes and then walked to the apartment ourselves. She was then grumpy about the fact that we didn’t continue to wait.
Simple and easy to use.
Bill Wilkinson on Oct 2018:

Loved the feel of a neighborhood rather than the hotel scene.
A map to get to the flat
This stay has been fantastic! Feeling at home, far away from home. Location was very convenient.
Rosemary on Jul 2018:

It was very authentic Italian. We felt immersed in the culture. It was a good walk to get everywhere but it forced us to see so many things we would have missed if we would have stayed near San Marco. Loved campo San margarita —food choices were excellent and plentiful. Both gelato shops were yum!!! Shopping was great!!
Taking a credit card for the payment would be nice.
The only thing that was a bit inconvenient was that you couldn’t use a credit card to pay with.
Omar on Jun 2018:
Awesome location and comfortable apartment. Lots of space and an A/C that works great on hot days.
Mary McDonald on May 2018:

The location was great for ease of getting around Venice which can be confusing. Someone met us the first time to take us there but after that we had no probems
Well equipped other than no kettle or toaster.
Third time using Cross-Pollinate and has always been just what we wanted and with no problems.
Patricia gomez on Sep 2017:
The apartment was very confortable. Has everything we need. Nice a clean. The location was perfect.
Katy on Jul 2017:

The location of this apartment was excellent - close to the train/bas station and the fabulous Campo Santa Margherita, which feels slightly less touristy than the rest of the city. The apartment was also clean and well-equipped.
The preparatory emails were very helpful reminders.
Patrick McDonnell on May 2017:
Fab location close to bus rail and water taxis.
Paul Greenfeld on Apr 2017:

The apartment was in a great location. It was large and well furnished
I think that the apartment could be improved with the addition of a few small ammenities, such as a kettle, more coffee cups and some basics like tea, coffee, sugar and some (long-life) milk
Cross-Pollinate has been excellent and very helpful
Marcella on Oct 2016:

The apartment is in a great location in a nice, quiet neighbourhood near the university. It's not all that far from the train/bus stations, making it easy to get one's bearings. It's a pleasant (well-signposted) walk to Piazza San Marco via Campo Santa Margherita, which is very close to the apartment and is a great spot for morning coffee and watching the world go by. The apartment is cosy and well-equipped, and Fiammetta was very helpful before our arrival and arranged for us to be met at the bus station.
A remarkably stress-free experience and a great discovery. Will definitely use again!

Terri Goode on Jun 2016:

Great location in a roomy, cheery & very well appointed apartment exactly as pictured. Anna was waiting for us at the train as pre-arranged to walk us through the labarinth of walkways & bridges to the apartment --even with the train strike that delayed our arrival and the language differences, we were able to get the message to her that our train would be late. Anna was a delight & it was a small price to pay for the assurance that we would be led directly to Casa Valentina. I'd highly recommend booking Anna to first-timers to Venice--and returning visitors who are new to that neighborhood. I highly recommend a stay at Casa Valentina! The owner & Cross-Polinate responded promptly to every email inquiry. They even had a stack of guide books for visitors to borrow. It is evident that the owners take pride in their place. I would most definitely choose this apartment again if it is available on my next visit to Venice.
Not a big deal, but providing supplies to comply with the strict Venice trash collection laws & separation of types of trash would be helpful.
Cross-Pollinate is the best service I've ever used in all my travels in Europe. They've always responded promptly to my questions, their website is easy to navigate and booking is easy, their photos & descriptions have always been accurate, it is evident that they've thoroughly screened their offerings. I wish they offered more locations!
Ian Tyers on Apr 2016:

Location and the apartment, both so good our family has used this apatment on two occasions - hopefully more in the future
I am a frequent client of this excellent website
Pam Bailey on Apr 2016:

I really liked the location in a less touristy part of Venice. It was great having two bedrooms and two baths and only one flight of stairs! The kitchen was well equipped and the wifi worked well. We appreciated having Anna meet us and guide us to the apartment.
This was my first experience with cross-pollinate and it was a good one! So glad I found a you!
Chris McKenna on Oct 2015:

Really good apartment, good location. Surprisingly easy for rialto bridge, st marks etc and perfect for exploring accademia. Great square nearby with bars/restaurants. Cross pollinate, fiametta the owner and Anna were very helpful.we will book this for next year
Nothing comes to mind
Very good thankyou.
Sally Hart on Sep 2015:

Clean, very spacious, large, comfy bed in main bedroom. Very close to eateries, cafes, supermarkets. Well equipped kitchen. Dorsoduro is lovely and has a local feel away from crowds.
Shower was a challenge. Had to turn hot on and wait a few minutes for it to come through. Enough hot water for one shower with hair wash. Then the capacity was used up..... It was noisy outside late at night until the wee hours most of the nights. Wife slept in the spare room to avoid the noise. Some more blankets on hand. Some new towels and kitchen tea towels to replace the ancient ones.
Always great and personal.
on Oct 2015:

Great location, convenient to sights and grocery store close.
Better instructions on use of stove and hot water heater.
Marion Dunham on Sep 2015:

The apartment was in a quiet convenient location...only a ten minute walk to the train station. It was also well furnished and certainly met our needs and wants.
There was some miscommunication re: our arrival time. Our train was only 10 minutes late and we waited about 35 minutes beyond that for our guide to meet us. Without a phone, we struck out on our own. Eventually with the help of Cross-Pollinate and the apt.'s owner, all was resolved. Improvement in the initial contact would be plus...but have no idea how to resolve the problem.
We continue to be impressed with your organization...Steve certainly was on hand for us in Venice...immediate response to our email request for help. Our apartment rentals in Paris (2014), in Venice and in Rome (2015) have all been excellent and as described on your website. Would use your organization again in a heartbeat. (As we continue still to do at the Beehive).
Admin on 11. Oct 2015:
The owner is very diligent about sending someone to pick up guests at the station, knowing that Venice is confusing. We don't know what confusion caused them to miss each other. Ultimately, it was all resolved. Definitely having a phone is very helpful.
Joanne Hartmeyer on May 2015:

The location was perfect. Easy to access any site, restaurants, and water taxis as needed or desired. Loved the kitchen -- great place for four friends to hang out. Beds were comfortable. It was pretty quiet in the evening, but it was May and not yet the start of the vacation season.
The shower in the one bathroom was severely in need of cleaning. Also, for first-time visitors to Venice, instructions to locate the apartment and get keys are needed. We requested a guide but had difficulty finding the correct meeting spot, as we were unfamiliar with the town. However, once we connected, he was wonderful. Also believe that for "first timers," it is important to note the a "first floor" apartment DOES include stairs to the upper level.
I would use Cross-Pollinate again in a heartbeat!
Louise on Apr 2015:

The apartment was really clean and more spacious than the photos show. The two bathrooms were good as well. Location is just next to the university library which is pretty central, but is still quite a treck to the main attractions. The flat is very good value for money and we enjoyed our stay.
For me the bed was too hard, but my husband liked it. Also there were no duvets, just a sheet and a blanket. The flat is advertised that there is a washing machine, but we couldn't find one. A tiny request for us tea drinkers, a kettle would have been great, but the gas stove worked just fine.
The booking was very easy and efficient. Would book with them again.
Admin on 10. Apr 2015:
The washing machine is in the bathroom - very visible. Not sure how this was missed!
ian.tyers1@bigpond.com on Mar 2015:

This apartment proved to be the perfect solution for our Venice stay - two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a well equipped kitchen and laundry facilities, in an ideal location. The assistance from the owner prior to our visit was most useful and much appreciated. We will certainly revisit this apartment.
As usual the information and accuracy provided by Cross-Pollinate was excellent - the reason why I am a regular customer
Judith Forrest on Dec 2014:

This place was so comfortable. It had heaps of extras in the kitchen. It made our arriving and settling in very easy. I really liked having the couch in the kitchen, great place to hang out and visit! The place was very clean and in a great location for walking to most places. Also had a super crepe shop right on the corner.
We found in Europe most places don't have tea pots. That is my only suggestion as we had to use a saucepan as our tea pot. :-)
Cross pollinate were fabulous to deal with. It was such a personal touch the way they really helped us look for a place in Venice over the New Year. I highly recommend them. Thanks so much!
Kevin on Oct 2014:

Communication with owner / staff was timely, effective and uncomplicated. Apartment was spacious, clean and well laid out. Household items and appliances were modern and easy to use. We felt at home after long, pleasant days exploring Venice.
The pictures on the website actually do not do justice to this lovely apartment.
An uncomplicated and thorough website to navigate. Timely communication at booking and exchange of information. Planning with owner so effective afterwards that contact with Cross-Pollinate was not necessary. Will definitely use this service again in the near future and highly recommend.
Jodie on Oct 2014:

The location near Campo Santa Margherita was great for us. A little out of the center, but near the train station, a market and lots of cafes and restaurants. The apartment has everything you need.
The street outside the apartment is a lively thoroughfare, so it's quite noisy if you like to keep the windows open. We got used to it after a couple of days.
Cross-Pollinate suggested this place after another we looked at became booked while we were waiting to hear back. We appreciated the help in narrowing down what was still available in the city.
Keira on Jun 2014:

Once shown how the guesthouse was easy to get to from the station
The apartment had a smell of cigarette smoke. Included wifi.
Easy and proactive to deal with
L & L on May 2014:

We arranged with the owner to have someone meet us at Piazzale Roma Station, for a modest fee, to escort us to the apartment. This was a huge help. We engaged a local porter at P. Roma to transport our luggage up and down the 5 bridges and on to the apartment. Best Euros we spent. The apartment is as advertised and the pictures on line were accurate. We received the apartment in immaculate condition. For two people, this apartment was spacious. All Appliances were in working condition, and there were plenty of cooking utensils. As recommended in previous reviews, a tutorial on how to work European appliances (and the door locks) are, in our opinion, essential. We did not need to use AC or Heating, but both were available. There was plenty of hot water, with good water flow in shower, pull down screens in each window provided insect protection. With the windows and shutters open, the apartment was bright and airy. The apartment is a 10 minute walk from Piazzale Roma Station and is located in an energetic and vibrant college neighborhood. It is a three minute walk to Campo Santa Margherita, where there is a commercial grocery store, green grocer and bulk wine store. Many cafés and restaurants lined the Campo, making it a delightful place to enjoy an end of day refreshment or meal. After 6PM the Campo fills with families, children and dogs. Great for people watching. Previous renters had left some Venice guide books to share. We also contributed to the library.
Nothing. We thought the apartment was wonderful. Nice to be able to come "home" after a long day of being tourists.
This was our first apartment rental in Europe, and we were very apprehensive about the process. Cross Pollinate was fabulous in answering our (many) questions. Somehow, Amy became our personal concierge and prompt in getting back to us. We are using Cross Pollinate this fall for a B&B rental in Florence.
Kath & Greg on May 2014:

The apartment was in a great location, close enough to all the sights but far enough to be out of the crowds. Having Rica come to meet us at the train station was fantastic too, I'm not sure that we would have found the apartment without her help. The apartment itself is roomy and had everything we needed for our 4 night stay. The square nearby offers fairly cheap food and drinks by Venice pricing as it is close to the university so caters to student budgets; it was a nice place to have a few drinks and relax after a busy day sight-seeing.
There is no WiFi in the apartment, but this isn't really a problem as there are loads of cafes and bars in the square near-by that offer it free. The street outside was really noisy on Saturday night with those going home from the bars, but there isn't too much that the owner can do about this.
We would definitely use cross-pollinate again. For the trip we used for two different locations and both apartments were great. The reviews and the photos were accurate so no nasty surprises. The prices were really reasonable too.
Mark Slavin on May 2014:
We, 4 adults, stayed 3 nights. Location is perfect, place is clean, spacious and in good condition. Campo Santa Margherita is a min away with the best ice cream in Venice. Owner met us at the bus station and walked to the apartment. The great place to stay in Venice, we definitely will stay there the next time in Venice.
Sonja on Mar 2014:

I stayed for the 2nd time in this apartment. That says it all I think. The apartment is cosy, practical and comfortable. Towels and bed linen provided, kitchen appliances sufficiently available. Bathrooms are sufficient. Within 5 minutes are supermarket, bakery and restaurants available.
There is 1 double bedroom and 1 single bedroom. The other double sofa bed is in a sort of Hall near the door of the double bedroom and is thus not really a private room. This is not a problem but it is handy to know if you've got a few people are using the apartment.
We already have several times used Cross-Pollinate to our satisfaction. The fast response time and the information given is comprehensive and transparent.
on Nov 2013:

The apartment was fully equipped, however there was no dryer (if you need one). It was close enough to both the bus and train stations.
The location unfortunately was right down the street from the University of Venecia, which has many partying students walking past and ringing the doorbell of the apartment up until 2pm on the weekend nights.
I will definitely use this website again. The personnel were very helpful and responsive to any questions I had.
Chris T on Oct 2013:

For a reasonable fee, the owner arranged to have someone meet us at the train station to guide us to the apartment. It was our first time in Venice and we surely would have gotten lost if we had tried to find our own way. The apartment is very well situated near Campo Santa Margarita, which has a bustling student social scene as well as a grocery store, fresh produce sellers, and a morning fish market. The apartment was very comfortable with a well stocked kitchen with basics like salt and pepper, paper towels, and napkins.
The person who met us (not the owner) was very friendly and helpful but spoke almost no English, so we could only communicate in a limited way. I would suggest coaching her to provide a receipt for the rent payment (we had to ask for one after looking up the correct word in Italian) and also a list of helpful information such as: location of nearest grocery store, fresh produce and fish markets in Campo Santa Margarita, recommended nearby restaurants, nearest vaporetto stop, and garbage disposal procedures.
This is our second time using Cross-Pollinate and we are very pleased--we will certainly make use of your services again on our next trip to Italy.
Francine Kenny on Sep 2013:

The suite was spacious and comfortable. The owner sent an English speaking fellow to pick us at the bus station and took us to the train when we were leaving, We found this very helpful. We were grateful for the shutters which kept out the noise from thee street below. We really enjoyed the nearby square.
The computer was not worth paying extra for as it is so slow I never did get connected. I would much prefer to have WiFi. The cleaning person came the day we were suppose to leave and just dumped all our stuff on top of our suitcases. Although this was inconvenient I think it was just a matter of miscommunication.
Cross-Pollinate is excellent, easy to browse through properties and very professional in the process of renting.
Robert on Oct 2013:

Everything: Fiammetta was as helpful as could be. The apartment was generously set up, and in a very nice convenient area. We felt at home and had a really lovely week there.
Perhaps just a little notice warning that the very effective mosquito screens need to be kept down. Once we realised we found the screens were very good.
A delightful help!
Yvon Poitras on Sep 2013:

Walking distance to everything. Excellent value . Would stay there again.
Easy to book and well organized to confirm and get the information from owners to us. Will use your service again. Many thanks.
Tracy & Annemarie Turbak on Sep 2013:

Apartment was well-equipped. A/C worked very well which was much-appreciated after a hot day exploring Venizia. Very spacious apartment, comfortable bed and quiet neighborhood.
None - we'd happily stay here again!
Everything went smoothly. The information provided was accurate and the transaction was handled just as indicated.
Jenny on Jun 2013:

Great location, not too busy and close to everything. Apartment very clean and kitchen living area was a super good set up. Bedrooms were excellent and air conditioning worked well. Nothing but good things to say about this lovely place. Guidebooks to venice were available in English a real boon thanks.
Wifi didn't work but there are plenty of wifi areas in local cafea
Really helpful service, definitely responsive and the properties are carefully selected in my view
Sheryl reed on Jun 2013:

The apartment was in a neighborhood away from the tourist crowds. We felt as though we were getting a true feel for what it might be like to be a Venician. We walked to Campo Santa Margherita each morning to buy fruit for breakfast. It was a true sanctuary after long days of sightseeing. Very clean. Two baths. Fiammetta arranged for a girl to meet us at the bus station. The apartment is only about a ten minute walk to train station.
Easy to use. I felt like I could trust it. I felt like I was working with real people. Gave us a more authentic experience. Would use again.
Shelley Mays on Jun 2013:

Location of apt was great and that fact it had two baths was very handy.
We had a bit of a problem figuring how to get out of the door that led to the street and then how to get back in the apt door. A key lesson would have been helpful for us clueless Americans.
It was great, would use again
on Jun 2013:

Great location and very well equipped - very good air conditioning! - responsive owner - let us check out late.
Neighbours upstairs rather noisy/partying - but not sure how that could be improved!
second time used for Venice- love the system and service!
Kelly on Jun 2013:

The apartment was pretty much exactly as seen in the pictures. The bed was comfortable and the air conditioning worked well. The stall shower was a little tight but fine, with good water pressure. The location is terrific, right off of Campo Santa Margherita which is very lively and a nice place to stop for a morning coffee or a drink at night.
The towels are a bit scratchy.
Everything was terrific.
Chelsea on May 2013:

The apartment was large, clean, and well stocked. We enjoyed the location, as it was in a quiet area but also a short distance to public transportation and the train station. The owner was very nice, welcoming and helpful with any problems that we ran into. Would definitely recommend!
The only downside of our stay was the Internet. For an extra charge, the owner supplied a computer with access to the Internet, but it was slow and it wasn't wireless so we couldnt connect with our devices. Though this was not a big problem because many cafès and pizzerias have free wifi so we were able to stay connected the entire time.
I really enjoyed using Cross-Pollinate. Their recommendation for our stay in Venice was perfect. I would and have recommended this site to friends and will use it again!
Sonja on Mar 2013:

It is a cosy appartment with a kitchen/dining room as a center (living area). The living area is not big but that was not a problem. We have been there with 4 adults. Very nice to have 2 separate bathrooms including toilet. The appartment was clean. The master bedroom is very nice. The appartment is situated in a nice surrounding in Dorsoduro 3 minutes away from Campo Santa Margherita.
An improvement could be to have a double bed in the single bedroom. It is a small room but maybe instead of a desk and a cabinet a double bed with one side at the wall would be possible. It will give some more privacy.
It has been the second time we use the services of cross pollinate with pleasure. The information is transparent. They respond very quickly. It appears that availability of some appartments was not up-to-date. That is a pity but they give good alternatives.
