Cross Pollinate was just the best. I had tried a couple of places before coming upon them. As soon as I sent the first email I stopped looking for any more websites. I just wish they expanded to every city in Europe. Their knowledge, helpfulness, etc. was second to none. - Caroline Collis
Millefiori Guestrooms
Millefiori used to be part of The Beehive Hotel - we rented them as our own, off-site guestrooms. In the same building lives Assunta Flora, who owns L'Altra Luna, which is another property further down the street. Since we found her a perfectly hospitable and professional host, we decided to turn the management over to her so guests would have easier access to staff and someone could be more responsible to its upkeep.

Millefiori was always the "funkier" of our apartments. It was once destined to be an artist's studio for Polish born painter, Alessandro Kokocinsky. He painstakingly stripped the walls of decades worth of paint to reveal the original turn of the century interior. Millefiori has 3 large, simple, cool and quiet bedrooms, a nice sized living room/dining room with kitchen area and a computer that's always on-line and free to use. There are two recently renovated bathrooms with shower for the three guest rooms.

Located near Rome's largest fruit and vegetable market and the Piazza Vittorio metro station, it's a good place for someone who wants easy access from Termini, and wants to combine an affordable private room with the ability to cook and socialize with others.

Assunta was most kind and helpful and the apartment (Millefiori) is a delight.
Cross-Pollinate is easy to use and its not impersonal - you feel that you are communicating with a real person.
Kayne on Apr 2015:

Having the shared space/kitchen area and 2 bathrooms after a long day sightseeing. Very close to Roma Termini station and metro stop. Assunta was so helpful and made sure we know all the best spots in the neighborhood.
None since Assunta volunteered to give us two 2-person rooms instead of the 4-person we originally reserved for. It doesn't get better than that.
Very easy. The recommendation worked out great.
Barbara on Apr 2015:
So much thanks , Assunta you help me a lot.
Daniel Owens on Nov 2014:

A very helpful host.
The hot water in the shower went on and off. Not a big deal.
Jodie on Oct 2014:

We enjoyed staying here for four nights in October. It's near the train station and we could walk nearly everywhere. The neighborhood is very international, but that's part of its charm. Very clean. Assunta is a terrific host. She helped us get acclimated to the city and gave us some good tips. Strong wifi was a plus.
The keys are tricky, as others have noted, but we got the hang of them after a day.
The Bee's guide to Rome was terrific. We really enjoyed the Meid in Nepols restaurant they recommended on the other side of the train station.
Jenny on Oct 2014:

Staff went above and beyond, she was fabulous! location bathroom, shower was awesome!
The bed had a vertical ridge in the middle (2 twins together) so you couldn't sleep in the middle, only one side or the other
easy to use
Matthew Wood on Oct 2014:

The room was clean, large, and quiet. Asunta, the owner, was friendly and helpful.
The outside key didn't work too well - though I did get the hang of it eventually.
Carol on Oct 2014:

Assunta was very helpful with arrival arrangements and helpful tips.
The key system is problematic. There are four keys. The one for the outside interest takes some jimmying to make to work; the one for the inner courtyard entrance is even tougher.
Larry Gaissert on Sep 2014:

I liked the proximity to Termini Station and how helpful Flora was. I would stay here again.
The locks on the front gate and inside gate were difficult to open.
I am very pleased with my experience. Everyone was helpful...from beginning to end. Thank you very much.
TJ on Sep 2014:
-Great hospitality. The manager is very friendly and helpful with the city's info. -The bedroom and showers are clean and decent in size. -About 10-15 minutes walk to the Termini train station and the nearest metro station. -Use of microwave, wifi, small oven.
JV on Sep 2014:

Spacious rooms.
I have recommended Cross-Pollinate to others traveling to Rome and will use it again should the occasion arise.
Lara on Sep 2014:

Big spacious room & quiet location very close to termini station
very helpful finding alternative accom when first request wasn't available
Pam elder on Sep 2014:

The charm and spaciousness were abundant. Flora was kind and most helpful with getting us in right bus and metro.
Keys were tricky
Wish we had stayed an extra night.
Hilary Iles on Jul 2014:

That is was in an old appartment block so you could experince how lots of locals were living. It's original decor, the way and keys used to get into it. The fact no one else was booked in so we had it all to ourselves. WOman who met us was really helpful.
Had difficulty getting into the main entrance from the road - might need a new key. Got in after ages of trying - suddenly it worked.
Extremely helpful -very good experience
Andrew on Jul 2014:

Friendly staff and convenient to Roma Termini. Price was about right considering the area. They have a nice modern refrigerator, large toaster oven and cook tops in case you want to buy food and cook there to save $$. Clean room and bathrooms.
Step to bathroom need to be better marked. They are raised about 2" above floor level and we tripped on more than one occasion.
We had a good stay. It is in a neighborhood so you get a good feel (bad and good) of the diverse populace in the City.
Justyna Pers on Jun 2014:

The whole place, location, decor, atmosphere, my bed! The online description was matching what I saw when I arrived so there was no disappointment.
It can be a little bit noisy because of the neighbours, but that was a minor problem.
I am very happy I was suggested Millefiori. It was exactly what I needed. Thank you.
Winnie on May 2014:

Assunta, the lady who looks after the apartment is very nice. Location is great, just 5 minutes walk from metro station and Rome Terminal.
Lighting in the rooms. It's a bit dark at night.
Quick response and easy to use.
Evel on Jun 2014:

Very good equipped kitchen, big private rooms, nice appartment
Improfessional hirer
We loved it very much. Good price for a private room and a nice, clean place
Derrick Main on May 2014:

Typical Italian apartment Free wifi Bathrooms clean and neat. Close to terminii Walking distance to tourist attractions including ice cream shop Secure
Towel rail or clothes horse in room could be an asset as bathrooms are shared.
Very helpful information provided. User friendly website. Quick response.
Carol & Jim on Apr 2014:

Millefiori is handy for walking to interesting sites and to public transportation; the facilities are comfortable; the fully equipped kitchen helped us to economize; and Assunta was extremely friendly and helpful. All in all an excellent choice for travellers looking for lodging in this price range.
Our only complaint was a minor one. We requested that no room service be done during our five-night stay, but on the fourth day we came home to find new sheets and towels anyway. We were disappointed that our attempt to reduce waste was in vain.
Staff were very prompt and friendly when responding by e-mail to my questions. We will definitely use Cross-Pollinate again if the opportunity arises.
Linda on Apr 2014:

Asunta Flora. What a great person! The spacious apartment. The room. The atmosphere. The nice, modern and clean bathroom.
The neighbourhood.
I stayed here for 2 nights with my son Chet (11). I had this address from my friend Kitty Brouwer, who stayed here before and I will certainly recommend it to other people. Thank you!
Phil Thompson on Jan 2014:

The owner of the Apartment Building and the caretaker, Assunta were very helpful The common area and bathrooms were cleaned each day. Being close to Termini was convenient for us. The apartment was very quiet. Wireless Internet was fairly fast.
New pillows, a decent butcher knife, and larger drinking glasses.
Prompt responses to questions and concerns., Everything went smoothly, and I have no complaints.
Ben on Oct 2013:

Great location, owner was brilliant and helpful. Made our stay really enjoyable and homely

good if u want good value and a true local experience!
Teaque on Sep 2013:

Assunta was very friendly and helpful. She was always available if we had any questions from tourist sites to where we can do our laundry! The room was very comfortable and the bathrooms were very well kept. The location of the apartment was in a very interesting neighborhood - we enjoyed the diversity very much! We had two apartment-mates and our various schedules worked out very well.
There was one neighbor (with a loud, booming voice) talking into the wee hours in the courtyard - but how could one control that?
Great! I will certainly recommend the service to any friends traveling to the Cross Pollinate areas
Elke on Oct 2013:

The rooms were very authentic, old italian style which you sometimes see in movies :-) A big plus: When we came back to the apartment each night the bathrooms were perfectly clean!
Assunta, the host, was extremely friendly and helpful and spoke very good english. You don't get any noise from traffic, only sometimes from the neighbors through the courtyard. Windows are original and a bit hard to unlock, but there is no need to change that because it adds to the charm.
Ali on Sep 2013:

This was a lovely base for us during our stay in Rome. The guesthouse was very clean and the bedroom huge! The location was easy to find from the train station and we could walk to a lot of the main attractions. The metro was very close also. This place was recommended to us and I have since recommended it to several people. Thanks for a lovely stay in Rome!
Cross-Pollinate were very easy to use and I would definitely use them again.
Jelco de Jong on Sep 2013:

Place was very clean and spacious, baby chair and cot are available. Reserved taxi to the airport worked perfect as well. Location very close to Colosseum, metro and Termini railway station.
The location is in a very international area, with more indian than italian restaurants. The elevator is very old and small and does not fit a stroller.
Perfect advice on where to go, simple booking process.
Deanna on Sep 2013:

The host was helpful, accommodating and incredibly friendly - she pointed us to the highlight attractions and local eats.
-knowing that the hot water tank must be turned on to have hot water for showers -ability to lock the bedroom door from inside the room for extra security at night, since the apartment is shared with up to 2 other groups of people
Neil on Sep 2013:

We recently stayed for 6 nights in the Millefiori apartment. The owners were extremely friendly and courteous and couldn't do enough for us. We had interesting discussions about how to make the most from our time in Rome and were even treated to a free breakfast when there was a slight issue with the shower, which was a nice gesture. The apartment was clean and very secure. Very conveniently placed for Termini train station. It's located in an ethnically diverse part of Rome but we didn't find the neighbourhood in any way threatening. Very handy also having internet access in the flat. It's also got an excellent cafe next door which is very handy for breakfast. All in all, if i returned to Rome i'd definitely consider Millefiori as a place to stay.
There was a slight problem sometimes getting the front door key for the building to turn the lock. However, this was being worked on the last day we stayed so should hopefully have been resolved now. I also had a slight difficulty getting the hot/cold water to balance in the shower in the large bathroom.
Very good, clear and timely service, everything went to plan. Will definitely look to use again.
Klaus on Sep 2013:

I stayed both at the Beehive and the Millefiori during my stay in Rome. I was very happy with both and it gave me two differing experiences as a result. The Beehive is more hotel, while the Millefiori is an apartment and gives you some idea what it might be like to live in Rome. The courtyard noises during the day added to that sense, however it was quiet at night. Room, bathroom, sitting area, etc were clean and comfortable with a computer and internet access. The old elevator reflects the fact the building is probably from the late 1800s and was great fun to use. The front door lock took some playing around with to get in but wasn't really a problem, you eventually found the right "touch". The area is a few minutes further to walk to from main train station than the Beehive, but a tramstop is only a block or two on Via Napoleone III if you want to save a walk to the station or back. The area around is mixed ethnically just like the rest of the world and presented no problems. The hole in the wall cafe to the left was fun to sit in and watch Rome wake up.
Couldn't always get hot/cold water in bathroom to balance.
Staying at the Beehive, et al, definitely added to my experience in Rome and plan to stay there again. It's quite helpful that they can find you a place to stay if they are full - beats constant trolling on the Internet. Steve and everyone I met was not only helpful with information regarding the usual tourist logistics: where to eat, how do you get there? etc., but also when time permitted to talk about Italy today and how it compares to where you live, giving you greater insight into life in Rome.
patrice on Aug 2013:

Comfortable, clean, welcoming!
Only two things: wine opener (perhaps someone took by mistake!) and better temp controls in the larger shower (we didn't use the small shower).
3 for 3: great!
Joy Murray on Jul 2013:

Apartment was very well equipped with everything to make a stay comfortable and enjoyable. Bright and spacious rooms, a great place to return to as respite from sightseeing trail. Enjoyed the location, which was slightly off the tourist mainstream, but safe and got to know the locals a little
Only that the front door key took some jiggling, and it wasnt always pleasant to try to get it too work standing outside in 35C heat or late at night
I think Cross Pollinate is superb. Have already passed on recommendations
Laura Elkins on Jul 2013:

It was very close to the train station and for an early morning train this was perfect. It was clean and comfortable
A bit noisy and the neighborhood was mot as comfortable as we would have liked. For the one night it worked though. Key was a bit tricky
Kelly on May 2013:

The cleanliness of the bathroom is something I'm very particular about, and one of the reasons why I'm hesitant to stay in shared bathroom places. But the showers and bathrooms in Millefiori were cleaned daily, and I was very impressed.
Cross-Pollinate has a surprisingly clear website layout, and I found the staff really helpful when we had any questions.
Carla on May 2013:

Assunta was very helpful when we arrived in Rome. She provided us with ideas and walking distances for sites around town. She was also very easy to get in contact with via email and/or phone. The place was all we needed. Rooms were basic but clean. Great people shared the common space with us which made comparing notes at night more enjoyable.
Was very efficient and quick to response even with last minute bookings.
Scott on May 2013:

The room was huge, the computer and internet access was helpful, and the staff (Assunta) could not have been nicer and more helpful.
Nothing that I can think of.
It was an excellent service. The staff were very helpful and went out of their way not only with arranging my accommodations but with arranging for a taxi to pick up my family at the airport (we arrived after the last train left).
Michelle on May 2013:

Loved having a kitchen and two bathrooms available. Next time I would love to have more time to prepare a meal or two with all the fabulous produce available nearby. We were fortunate that the young women we shared the place with were only there one of our 4 nights, so then we had the whole place to ourselves and it felt very luxurious. Loved being able to get to know Assunta -- what a lovely lady. And her recommendation of the gelateria nearby was much appreciated. The location is great -- especially since I knew that we could come out the side of the train station rather than walking all the way to the front and backtracking. Loved having a computer and wi-fi available -- first time we'd been able to use it in two weeks. Loved being able to open the windows and listen to life in Rome. Loved the size of the room -- especially for four of us. By comparison our room in London (not booked through you) was barely bigger than the footprint of two beds.
I was okay with the bed, but my husband and sons found them quite uncomfortable.
I will definitely be using you again. Thanks for all you do.
SANTORO on May 2013:
we enjoyed our stay at your flat clean and comfortable and we really appreciate your welcome .
Raja on May 2013:

Excellent location and within walking distance of train station. The room and the shared kitchen were clean and well maintained. Assunta was also very friendly and also gave excellent recommends of restaurants and gelota locations.I would recommend anyone staying here to visit Fassi for an excellent dessert.
The only small inconvenience was that the hot water in the bathroom showers were not of the same temperature consistently and we had to keep adjusting the knobs constantly. A small inconvenience but an excellent experience overall. I would stay at this home again.
Karen on Apr 2013:

I loved the light, bright apartment- high ceilings, large room. We only stayed 1 night, shared with 2 other families. 2 full bathrooms, nice kitchen/ common area, easy walk from Termini.
The 1 night we stayed there were 3 families for a total of 8 people sharing the apartment. Not sure, but may be too many people at one time for comfort.
Very good, helpful, bookings made easily, quickly.
Michael-Anne on Apr 2013:

The adequate kitchen, the daily clean up person, the proximity to Termini, 2 bathrooms, 3 markets close by, Wifi, artsy feel, and the most pleasant hostess Assunta.
Fans in rooms for the warm evenings.
Fast, courteous and professional. Loved being able to find a small family business that kept things neat and tidy. Couldn't have done that without Beehive on such a tight budget.

Glad you had a good stay. There are fans there - you might have to ask for them though since you were there in February, they probably didn't imagine they'd be wanted/needed.

We really appreciated the large room with the large bed, the newly renovated bathrooms and the very friendly owner! They had always time for our concerns.

Luminara on Apr 2012:

We liked having an apartment-like stay in Rome, with kitchen, large dining room and computer available to use + wifi. I felt it was in a good location. I had heard that it's 'rough' near the train station, but that's false. It is an area of lots of ethnicity other than Italians, which I did not feel was dangerous at all. It was convenient to many subway stops and walking to the market a couple of blocks away (fresh food to cook and very cheap). Some of the other guests were friendly so we had an exchange of a few stories and advice. I also liked having the guest book with advice (it was in the dining room). Your guest house manager (cannot remember her name now) was very kind, helpful and super-sweet with my son! The beds were comfy and room large, very spacious.
hot water management. very weird that sometimes the water goes cold, sometimes the entire shower was warm/hot and reasonable, but it made no sense when it would be hot or lose hot water. Our price was quite expensive (35/person), even compared to two others staying in the next room a couple nights later (25 or 28/night). I guess it's all about availability, but that kind of sucks that we paid so much more then they did for the exact same thing at the same time - and we stayed a few days longer!
Cross-pollinate is a good name, as we met others and did not sit in a sterile hotel room, isolated from other travelers.

Noah on Aug 2012:

Spacious, kind reception, fairly quiet in the heart of Rome, pleasant temperature on one of the hottest days of the summer (without need for air conditioning!), free internet (slow, but I needed it!). Excellent rates (not the cheapest place solo, but easily among the cheapest as a couple, with a beautiful and clean private room and use of a clean kitchen shared with only 2 other rooms.
Communication: I did not have a phone and wasn\'t able to contact the person to let me in for about 30 minutes (used the phone at the cafe next door, so not a huge problem).
requiring commitment by credit card before knowing whether there were rooms available was not appreciated, and is very hard for last-minute reservations. But they are readily available by phone, which made it much simpler.
John on Sep 2012:

The location is great in terms of proximity to the train station and other metro needs. It is within walking distance of the main sites of ancient Rome. The lady who let us in was incredibly helpful with mapping out the area and filling us in on safety tips and how to navigate the city. She also educated us on the historical informatiin of this very buulding which is fascinating. There is a very good grocery store close by and a fantastic gelato cafe. The kitchen is very well equipped and the main sitting area is spacious and pleasant. The bedrooms are a good size and quiet. Excellent price for what you get!
The only room that is a little iffy for a feel of good hygiene is the bathroom. The shower area in particular is not as hygienic as it should be. The area looks questionable .. particularly at night. But we were assured it was very safe .. and so it was!
Cross-Pollinate was fantastic with giving us options within our stated price range. They were prompt with communications and answering questions. High recommendations!
