My House in Lisbon - Santa Cruz
Castelo de São Jorge is a landmark of Lisbon and one of Lisbon’s oldest neighborhoods - synonymous with Portugal’s fight against Moorish invaders, which led to their repulsion and to Portugal first king being declared, Dom Afonso Henriques.

Within the thick stone walls of the castle are an authentic ensemble of houses, shops and narrow streets. Just 6 streets and the Church square make up this unique car-restricted neighborhood (only taxis and residents' cars are allowed in), where time seems to have stood still - everyone knows everyone else & neighbors greet each other across the street, as they hang out the washing!

This is a cozy and charming flat, but somewhat compact at approximately 50 m2 (500 sq ft) with no outdoor space, yet perfect for up to 4 people + 1 infant. Rua de Santa Cruz do Castelo is a charming and quiet street boasting a few quaint, basic and affordable shops and cafes, and being a must visit area of Lisbon, a few inevitable tourist gift shops too. To arrive at the property by public transport includes a steep uphill climb through cobbled streets however, so we recommend you hop into a taxi which are generally cheap & cheerful in Lisbon.

There is a Drogaria (drug store) that sells everything and anything; there are two friendly cafés to jump start your day; a bijou wine & gourmet shop; and a café-restaurant-Fado haunt where the owner holds impromptu and highly successful musical afternoons or evenings & where old and young, fado lovers and stray tourists mingle, for an inimitable and truly Portuguese experience. The Igreja de Santa Cruz (church) is simple yet moving, open for Saturdays 6pm Catholic Mass. Throughout the year, a number of processions wind their way through the neighborhood and you are welcome to join them!

The apartment is on the 2nd floor and was recently renovated with original wooden floors – it comprises one bedroom with a double bed (1,40m x 2,00m) plus another with bunkbeds (2 x 0,90m x 2,00m), whilst each bed has a choice of a light summer or heavier winter duvet. The living room has comfortable seating and 15” colour TV, plus DVD player, a Sony radio/CD player with MP3 and USB entry. There are also playing cards, board games, and a small library of books, magazines and guides to Lisbon to keep you entertained. Unlimited WIFI internet connection is included at no extra cost. The kitchen / dining area is fully equipped with table and chairs seating up to four, a fridge/freezer, gas stove & oven, microwave, filter coffee machine, electric kettle, toaster, food blender, crockery & silverware for four people, an iron & ironing board. The bathroom has a small bathtub with adjustable wall shower & a hairdryer is supplied.

This is a non smoking apartment. Electric heating if necessary is included and fans are on request. Specially for children a travel cot (with bed linen), stroller and high chair can be supplied; and the apartment is also equipped with children size crockery and silverware.

On arrival guests get a few basics to keep them going such lavatory paper, soap, dish washing liquid, dish sponge, kitchen cloth, coffee machine filters, matches, plus sugar, tea, coffee, olive oil, vinegar, salt & pepper but there is a good supermarket nearby for other requirements.

Erica F. on Aug 2018:

The location was exceptionally great and the host was marvelous in explaining local sites and the amenities of his apartment.
I cannot think of anything.
The site worked fine.
Kevin Regan on Jun 2018:

We really liked the location and the facilities. A perfect base from which to explore Lisbon. The owner responded very promptly to my inquiries and was extremely helpful in making sure our visit was a success. I would highly recommend My House in Lisbon - Santa Cruz.
Nothing that I can think of. It was all very nice.
I was new to Cross Pollinate and a bit unsure; however, it was a great experience and I will definitely recommend it to others.
Julie Benson on Sep 2017:

Loved being in the castle surrounded by so much history and ambience. Very quiet at night and peaceful. Easy walking to the market and restaurants. Kitchen is nicely equipped with essentials. Owner went out of his way to explain the apartment and the areas sights. So kind of him to leave us a bottle of wine as well. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to a couple or a family as there are bunk beds in the 2nd bedroom.
Nothing.

We loved everything! This was the second time for our family of four staying in the apartment, and we loved it just as much. Such a great location! So close to the castello, you can hear the calls of the peacocks in the trees. Goncalo is a great host.
Joan Wortis on Nov 2016:

Not only was this a perfect location but the owners went out of their way to provide comfort, help and information. We could not have asked for anything better. This is a romantic spot and easy to access both the Alfama and other neighborhoods.
Your site and communication have been very easy, as opposed to Airbnb. If you expanded, we would use you all the time. But then you might not have such an easy and friendly feel if you got big like them. Thank God for the mention in Rick Steves Portugal book.
Fausto & Cindy on Oct 2016:

Location, just a short walk to the Castelo, a small market, and some great little restaurants. Being up on the hill means it's a little far from the rest of the city, but the bus stop was close by and we were able to get downtown quickly and easily. The owner provided a booklet with places to to eat and visit, he was also helpful with transportation options to and from the airport. Very quiet during evenings and the neighborhood is nice to just walk. The gift of a bottle of wine was also a nice touch. Although there is no elevator, it's just one short flight of stairs. A very enjoyable stay.
Nothing that I we could think of.
Very helpful and quick to respond to questions.
Peter Devlin on Jun 2016:

The apartment was immaculate, perfectly comfortable and located in a super-cool part of town near everything you want or need in Lisbon.
I could have more vacation time each year.
Cross-pollinate worked easily and honestly.
Lynn on Sep 2015:

We loved our stay! The owners were the best. They were the most helpful people, even in as far as helping us get a rental car. The flat was such a fun place to stay, we felt like locals watching tourists walk by our windows.
We were happy with Cross-pollinate.
Teneil on Jul 2015:

Perfect location and gracious hosts! Our stay in Lisbon was absolutely wonderful and the apartment was a fabulous home away from home. Just perfect!
Very easy, secure and helpful. Thanks for a great experience.
Heidi on May 2015:

Friendly, thoughtful, helpful owners. Home was well equipped and comfortable. Loved staying here and I am glad that we chose this option over a hotel.
Very easy to use and clear instructions and communication.

This was a great place! The location was amazing- we love to walk and we were able to walk to many fun areas from this location. It was also cute, clean, and comfortable. The owner was very nice and helped to orient us to the neighborhood and even called a cab for us when we left- altogether an enjoyable place to stay-thimbs up!
Can't think of anything off the top of my head.
Very helpful staff when there was a glitch with the web site and I appreciated the reminder email with details right before our arrival date.

The apartment was very cozy, very comfortable for our family of 4, and a great home-away-from-home. The kitchen is wonderfully equipped. The location right inside the castle walls was absolutely *perfect*. Goncalo was a wonderful host, and showed great hospitality, even a gift bottle of Portuguese wine to welcome us! He came down the road to meet us and help with our luggage since the taxi driver dropped us off outside the gates, and he made a lot of good suggestions for where to find things in the neighborhood and good things to do in Lisbon. He even received our luggage (it got lost en route and had to be delivered later by the airline) and packed it up to our apartment for us. We had a great visit and hope to return again.
Nothing
No problems; everything worked out great.
Diane and Luther Durgin on Jan 2014:

The friendliness and cordiality of host family. It was fun living inside the castle walls with the narrow streets. Being a part of the distinctive local culture. It was alright to hang the laundry outside the window as did everyone else. We thoroughly enjoyed Lisbon old town which was right down the hill. Transportation to other towns was readily available. We enjoyed ourselves .
The steep, narrow stairs cannot be improved upon. Fortunately our host carried our luggage up and down them. He was most gracious.
Cross-pollinate was fine.
Lynel D Vallier on Sep 2013:

Every thing. Great use of space. Very good location. Very nice and helpful owner (Goncalez). Good restaurants in the area and walkable to all of old town.If in Lisbon again I would stay here.
Square footage was not accurate. It was much bigger than advertised. This is why I gave accuracy only 3 stars.
excellent. Helpful and responsive.I have already looked them up for an upcoming trip to Greece but they have no properties there.
