My Place @ Lisbon Bairro Alto
This Bairro Alto apartment is located right at the centre of a quaint and bustling old quarter of Lisbon, renowned for its nightlife. Whist car access to the area is only for locals, deliveries and taxis, the dozens of bars and eateries literally just round the corner will be buzzing till 2 am, especially at the weekends. However, being a modern building and a very comfortable flat on the 3rd floor with wooden floors and double-glazed windows, you can still get away from it all.

The apartment is suited for a small family (with baby cot on request) or group friends up to 4 people maximum - there is a spacious double bedroom, an extra sofa bed in the quiet hallway, a full bathroom, a spacious sitting/dining area with very large windows and views over the Bairro Alto roof tops towards the São Jorge castle in the distance, plus a kitchen. Generally, the apartment is very well equipped with central heating, air-conditioning & portable fans; there is also  a wide screen TV & DVD player & a music system;  whilst the kitchen has a gas cooker/oven, a fridge, a washing machine, a dishwasher, a microwave, a kettle, a toaster, a juice maker, an ironing board & iron.

There is plenty to enjoy in this neighborhood from just strolling around its quaint streets taking photographs, to eateries and bars or shopping at quirky boutiques.  We suggest you don’t miss a visit to “Galeria Zé dos Bois” (http://www.zedosbois.org/) a non profit making cultural organization that has weekly exhibitions, concerts and outdoor cinema in the summer months and is located just around the corner from the apartment. The Bairro Alto is also the home of “Fado” in Lisbon - Portugal’s national song is mournful and sad and accompanied by guitars but quite an experience! You will find quite a few places in the area advertising Fado (some however are more of a tourist attraction and the genuine thing), so avoid it when someone with a menu invites you in, but look out instead for a hole-in-the-wall crowded by locals listening to some singing and guitar playing...

The Baixa/Chiado metro station is approx 300 meters away and you can also walk to Cais do Sodré (15-20 minutes away) and get a train to Cascais on the coast or stop at one of the beaches along the way for a day out.  Another suggested outing is to get the train from Rossio Station (also about 15-20 minutes’ walk) and go to romantic & exotic Sintra, approx 20 kms outside Lisbon. Or you can just hop onto the Tram 28 at Praça do Camões and enjoy a ride through narrow cobbled streets all the way up to the castle and back.

Excellente situation géographique, très bien équipé, immeuble de standing, appartement vaste et confortable, bien aménagé. Le propriétaire, Mauro, est d'une extrême gentillesse et très arrangeant pour les horaires d'arrivée et de départ.
Alejandro on Jan 2017:

Central Location (great, but loud). Sizable elevator. Secure building. Large apartment.
Better towels, bathroom getting shabby, and shower leaks. Extra bedsheet. Air Conditioner terrible set up.

good location for getting around on foot.
when we arrived it took us several minutes to find the building as the number 59 was so faintly written on the top right corner of the glass entry door. perhaps the owner could state this in his description so future guests will find it more easily. we did not have hot water for the entire stay. we did notify mauro by email the 2nd afternoon. he got back to us very late at night. on the 3rd day, he said he would come by which he did at 4.30 p.m. he realized it would need to be fixed and offered a repairman to come the following morning at 10 but we were leaving at 8. this was quite inconvenient as we couldn't shower. the location of the apt is in a bar area. this is noted on the website but we didn't realize the noise would go to 4.30 p.m. thankfully we had a bedroom fan which helped drown out the noise.
cross-pollinate is a great site. well organized, very user friendly.

Regarding the water, the guests sent the owner an email about it and he only saw the email a couple of hours after. Seeing that he couldn't solve the issue, he immediately called a technician to come and solve it but by that time the guests had left that morning. In any case, it was resolved within 24h after being informed.

The location was great, and the apartment was very spacious and comfortable. The building was one of the few modern ones in the area and had good amenities (such as an elevator, which was nice for weary travelers). We were provided with a map of local restaurants and attractions and this was quite helpful.
There was street noise until late at night, since the surrounding neighborhood is filled with bars and restaurants. It didn't bother us because we were tired from sightseeing, but light sleepers may want to seek a quieter neighborhood. Also, we had to run to the store for toilet paper - an extra roll would have been nice.
Very easy to use website

This is a very nice, modern apartment and suited the requirements for our family of 3 very well. The location is close to various attractions, restaurants, shopping etc.
A small complaint is the shower -- it did not seem to able to deliver consistently hot water during one's shower. It was literally cycling between hot and cool even though the faucet handles were not moved at all. The location of this apt. may not suit everybody as it is in an area full of bars, so it is a little noisy till late at night. We were exhausted at the end of the day with all the walking, so it did not bother us.
Excellent

Owner's rep met us outside. The apartment was in a vibrant neighborhood right in Lisbon; loads of people on the streets and in the bars and restaurants but always felt safe. It was very clean and comfortable, loaded with what we needed in kitchen, bath, bedroom, living room. The building is secure. Double-pane windows kept it quiet in spite of people on the streets until 3 a.m. bar closing.
A/C was in the living room only. The vent was just sticking out of an open window. A big fan in the bedroom kept it cool anyway.
Quickly found what we wanted on the web. We never had to contact Cross-Polinate again.
Deborah Hanlon on Apr 2015:

This apartment is really spacious, modern with lots of light. Mauro Alexandre, the owner was wonderful. The location in the old town is excellent. We walked every where as well as using the public transportation. Lisbon is fabulous.
The neighborhood is noisy on Friday and Saturday nights but we are night owls so we did not mind that much.
Great!
Michael Gerhardt on Jun 2014:

The apartment was attractive, comfortable and well stocked. We were aware that there was only a portable air conditioner and were concerned as Lisbon had a heat wave. But even with the heat, the apartment remained comfortable. Bairro Alto is known for its nightlife spilling onto the streets but the apartment was surprisingly quiet. It was a great central location for sightseeing.
Minor issues... it would have been nice having air-conditioning in the bedroom. And, we would have liked a colander in the kitchen. Throughout Portugal there was a lack of written orientation material so operating appliances, maintaining the apartment, etc. was often challenging.
Absolutely easy and painless to find and rent an apartment. The size of the company engendered trust. It felt like the company knew its stock.
Stacey on Jul 2013:

This is a spacious, modern, nice apartment. The location is perfect if you enjoy the nightlife. You are in the center of it all! Extremely clean. Would definitely stay here again.
It was so hot! The one a/c unit was not enough. We had a fan in the bedroom that helped a little. My son slept on the pull out in the hall where he melted from no circulation at all. It was crazy hot while we were there. The locals told me it was an unusual heat wave. During normal conditions the one a/c unit may be ok.
Wonderful. I have told everyone on my travels about how great they are! I pray they remain as affordable on our next trip, after all their great publicity! I can't imagine using anyone else!
