Accessed through a narrow and slightly wonky staircase (having no lift is part of the charm of Lisbon’s oldest properties) and enjoying river views over roof tops from the 2 top floors or street views from the 2 lower levels, these 4 very well equipped apartments would suit a large group travelling together. As well as a double bed (140cm) in each bedroom, all the apartments have a sofa bed so will accommodate 2 extra people with one shower bathroom per apartment. All the units also feature a TV with international channels, free wi-fi Internet, air-conditioning/heating unit in the sitting room, fans and radiators, ironing equipment and a hair dryer. The open plan kitchens are all fitted with a dishwasher, washing machine, a fridge, an electric oven and hob, plus toaster, kettle and microwave. Calçada do Forte where the apartments are located is a very small and steep street (so typical of this quarter of Lisbon) next to the Museu Militar (Military Museum), very near the Santa Apolonia train station and metro stop. Although some street parking is possible but difficult, there is a car park 5 minutes walk away. The area is also well serviced by bus routes.
The Location - Alfama is Lisbon’s oldest district and in some parts somewhat tatty but always full of “quaint” charm. Having survived the terrible 1755 earthquake and it is one of the most rewarding for walkers and photographers, thanks to its medieval alleys and outstanding views. It is a village within a city still made up of narrow streets, tiny squares, churches, and whitewashed houses with tile panels and wrought-iron balconies adorned with pots of flowers, drying laundry and caged birds.
The best way to get to know it is to get a little lost (something almost impossible to avoid), and wander around admiring the postcard-perfect views, visiting the churches, and walking up to the castle for the most breathtaking panorama of the city and the greatest sunsets.
Things to Do, Places to See - Alfama has influenced poets and novelists throughout the ages and has been the inspiration for many Fado songs – the area features some excellent Fado eateries with some of the best being of the "Fado vadio" variety, where non-professional singers get up to put their hearts and souls on show for all to see. The Fado Museum is also located nearby.
Contrasting with these timeless images is a trendy modern development by the waterfront across from Santa Apolonia train station. It houses stylish design shops, restaurants and one of Europe's top clubs, "Lux."
Other must-not-miss attractions nearby are the twice weekly Feira da Ladra, a local flea market held on Tuesdays & Saturdays; the Sé de Lisboa (cathedral) is the oldest building in the city; the Miradouro das Portas do Sol, a street balcony opening on the river and offering a truly spectacular views over Alfama; St. George's Castle which overlooks the city from millennium-old walls; and St Antony’s Church, the birthplace of Saint Anthony of Padua and patron saint of Lisbon, amongst many others.
