Zoo Rooms is a brand-new boutique B&B that just opened in June 2012. Steve, the Irish owner, has been brewing the idea for quite a while though... he's lived in Barcelona for several years running other B&Bs (a couple of which are also on our website), but he's long wanted to create his own place from scratch and had the name "Zoo Rooms" in the back of his mind for years. He finally got the chance to open his place this year, after major renovations which completely modernized the apartment. When I visited, it was still at the beginning stages of renovations, and Steve's friend Sara, a Portuguese artist, was standing on a table working on the animal-filled mural that now decorates the entire main wall of the living room area.
The guesthouse has 7 rooms, all with private ensuite bathroom. There's a large double room with a terrace view, a large double with balcony, a triple, and a "suite room" with balcony that sleeps 4 people. All the rooms are different but with modern, stylish decor -- and there are super cool lamps all over the B&B that look like jellyfish, designed by another friend of Steve's.
One of the highlights of the guesthouse is definitely its huge terrace! It's decked out with hammocks and lounge chairs for those who want to put their feet up and relax. They even organize weekly BBQs during the summer months, with an array of Argentinian and Galician meats, fresh fish, and grilled vegetarian dishes.
The guesthouse offers free WiFi, air-conditioning, a self-service breakfast, among other things. Guests are welcome to use the shared kitchen to cook meals.
L'Eixample is a great area to stay in, as it's outside of the craziness of the Old City / Ramblas areas, yet still really central and easy to get around from. Barcelona has a fabulous metro system and you'll have no problem getting to wherever you need to go from the area. You can walk to Gaudí's masterpieces La Pedrera and Casa Battló, which are a few blocks away. You've also got a wide range of restaurants, bars, clubs, and shops to choose from within walking distanze of Zoo Rooms.
